Deep in the Evanston Jungles

So you didn’t know Evanston has jungles? Well really… it does not. But the overgrown fringes of the CTA right-of-way on a warm summer day was a great excuse to contemplate leaf, light and shadow. And judiciously cropped, what is essentially an overgrown patch of weeds might substitute for jungle… though machetes are not allowed on CTA platforms. Listen! The cicada are restless…

The Squares of the City

Not exactly coincidentally, The Squares of the City was the title of another of the late John Brunner’s classic novels. The book’s plot was determined by the moves of an actual chess game. In this case, it was the competing metrics of reflection and of concrete that brought Brunner’s title to mind. I’m not sure what kind of game should be played on this board, but I am sure it’s expensive.
