I’m not a big fan of film criticism (or literary criticism either, really) so boosting the aspiring filmmaker who runs the coldcrash pictures vlog as my favorite film critic has a somewhat dubious ring to it. After all, would a Chicagoan ask a New Yorker about pizza? But if you’ve not seen his work, this fan flick of Sharknado seems like a good introduction:
“Water then food. Agriculture then industry. Old then new. Critical then extra. Simple to complex. Concrete to abstract. Dirt to clouds. Real to unreal.”

The infinite upward scroll makes a great metaphor for the great American belief in “progress”, whatever that might mean. If it seems familiar, it did to me. The first thing I thought of was Marco Bramilla’s “Civilization”:

As in a fever dream…
ASA, a film school in Paris, released their latest batch of end-of-year student films. They seem to like this one a lot (“felicitations du jury”). So do I.
You might take this as a discussion about the self-mutilation of passing. Or about how change can seem a lot like dying. Or “to thine own self be true.” Or “How is that civilization thing working out for you?” This is a delicious little video.
